CARPUS (Wrist)
- [ TOP ]
Carpus injuries can spell disaster for your pet. General practitioner Veterinarians use our carpus hyper-extension braces to support a carpus joint presenting mild hyper extension injuries that are not severe enough for surgery. Orthopedic Veterinarian surgeons use our non-articulating carpus braces to treat stress fractures, post-operative care, and . OrthoPets utilizes the most advanced composite rubber hinges for our custom hyper extension carpus brace. Upon initial paw contact to the ground, the composite rubber hinge will absorb the force and stress that the carpus joint can no longer handle. Once body weight is applied to the limb, the hinge will allow the normal 10-15 degree's of extension before reaching the end range of motion allowed by the hinge. This motion places the composite rubber hinge under tension during the stance phase of gait. This potential stored energy within the hinge is returned to assist the propulsion phase of gait. Our custom carpus brace allows your pet to get back to doing what pets do best: Enjoying life and sharing that excitement with you!

Typically, our custom carpus paw brace will begin as a non-articulating device for maximum support and control. This level of control is appropriate when there is a compromise to a joint fusion, when an infection mandates the premature removal of hardware used for joint fusion, or neurological injuries. Considerations and Instructions
WHY USE OTHOTIC
AND PROSTIC DEVICES?
The use of orthotic and prosthetic
devices is a successful treatment option for animals. This treatment
approach can be used
- when surgery is not available
due to the health or age of the pet
- if surgery is being postponed
until the pet's health improves
- instead of surgery
- to maintain the pet's current
position or status so surgical options can be
explored
- to correct joint alignment
due to neurological conditions, congenital deformities, or orthopedic
problems
- to reduce joint inflammation
from the effects of arthritis
- to manage joint pain
- to add joint stability
- to manage post-operative
recovery to prevent contractures (tightening of muscles that prevent
full range of motion)
- to manage post-stroke positioning
to prevent contractures
- to restore the pet's gait pattern
and agility
- to replace an amputated
limb or partially missing limb from a congenital birth defect,
which has a good residual stump remaining, with a prosthetic limb
