DATE: 4/1/2020
SUBJECT: COVID-19 Guidelines for Clinics/Hospitals and Pet Owners/Guardians
There is great benefit in supporting patients in need as soon as possible to help prevent loss of limb use and prevent patients learning 3-legged gait patterns. As such, during the COVID-19 crisis OrthoPets will allow the following if the owner cannot currently visit their DVM (Veterinarian) for support.
General Notes:
- All custom V-OP (veterinary orthotic and prosthetic) devices require a prescription from a DVM.
- Patient should be seen as soon as possible after receiving device, either in person or via telemedicine/video conferencing, to ensure for the proper care of patient.
- Regular follow-up care and rehabilitation is highly recommended.
Established Doctor/Patient Relationship:
- Impression for device and fitting of device can be done by owner if recommended and supported by DVM.
- Requirements: DVM prescription, Measurement Form, media (pictures and videos) and Contract.
No Current Doctor/Patient Relationship:
- Pet owner to contact DVM for assistance in diagnosis, requiring either an in-person visit or a telemedicine appointment. Some tentative diagnoses may be feasible via telemedicine.
- Impression for device and fitting of device can be done by owner if recommended and supported by DVM.
- Requirements: DVM prescription, Measurement Form, media (pictures and videos) and Contract.
DEVICE considerations:
- Stifle: In-person visit to DVM will be required (drawer test). A stifle orthotic with tarsus suspension wrap may be recommended by OrthoPets.
- Carpus & Tarsus: In-person visit may not be required. Device can be made similar to a cast until the patient gets orthopedic exam from DVM/surgeon. This device will incorporate a design that can be updated/modified to change it into a full featured custom orthotic later on based upon pathology and goals for the patient.
- Prosthetics: In-person visit is required, and patient must be already under the care of DVM.
OrthoPets Case Managers will assist pet owners and/or doctors through the process. Written instructions and video guidance are both available. Please call 303-953-2545 to talk to an OrthoPets Case Manager.
