FAQ

Casting For a Device

Why do I need an Impression Kit?

Your pet's custom leg brace or prosthetic device is created over this replica, for precision and accuracy to the model size and shape.

OrthoPets offers a complementary impression kit with each online order.

What comes inside the OrthoPets impression kit?

Each kit includes:

  • Fiberglass tape
  • 1 roll of the GLAD Press N Seal wrap
  • Bandage scissors & a hook cutting blade
  • Yellow cut strip
  • Tape measure
  • Sharpie marker
  • Medical gloves.

What if the fiberglass impression isn't accurate?

We may ask for a new impression to ensure the brace fits as intended. A high-quality impression is essential to minimize adjustments and ensure your pet's comfort.

Can I create the fiberglass impression myself?

This should be done by your veterinarian, as it requires specific techniques and proper landmarking to ensure accuracy.

Payment & Pricing

Do you offer a payment plan?

At this time, we do not offer payment plans. Because all braces and prosthetics are custom-made for each patient, fabrication begins only after full payment is received.

If your veterinarian offers CareCredit, we recommend working with them to place the order online and billing you through CareCredit for added flexibility.

Purchasing a 2nd device or a back up device? We offer a 10% discount for returning customers or for those needing two devices for their pet, such as in bilateral cases.

Why are OrthoPets devices more expensive?

At OrthoPets, we believe in providing the highest quality custom devices to meet the unique needs of every patient. Each device is crafted with precision using advanced techniques, high-grade materials, and a meticulous process perfected over years of experience.

Unlike mass-produced options, our custom solutions are designed to ensure comfort, function, and durability, offering a long-term investment in your pet's mobility and quality of life. The additional cost reflects our commitment to superior craftsmanship, expert care, and ongoing support for you and your pet.

Device Manufacturing & Materials

How are OrthoPets devices manufactured?

Once we receive your pet's fiberglass impression, we:

  1. Scan the impression to create a 3D digital model of your pet's limb.
  2. Digitally sculpt the 3D model to contour the device with unmatched accuracy.
  3. Vacuum-form the device shell using durable plastic heated in an industrial oven.
  4. Hand-Assemble the device with the straps, buckles, padding, and specialized components for functionality and comfort.
  5. Finish the device by cutting, grinding and polishing for a perfect fit.

Prosthetic devices require additional steps, including socket padding, alignment, and integration of extension components

What materials are used in OrthoPets devices?

Our materials are selected for durability, comfort, and functionality, including:

  • Waterproof, closed-cell foam padding
  • Reinforced industrial Velcro for secure straps
  • BMX tire tread or orthopedic-grade tread for paw segments
  • Specialized hinges for normal joint motion and weight support

Refund Policy

Are your devices refundable?

OrthoPets devices are non-refundable as they are prescription based and custom fabricated.

What is media and why is it required?

How to Take Patient Media

I do not see the solution I am looking for on your website. Can you still create something for me?

The devices on our website are to provide you examples of common dog braces fabricated by OrthoPets. We consider every case to be unique and will fabricate a device that will be functional and comfortable for your pet. Please contact OrthoPets to discuss unique options available.

What is the difference between an “over the counter” splint and a custom dog brace?

An “over the counter” device is not made to fit an individual patient and their individual needs. They are made in bulk to “fit” patients grouped together into categories by size, not individual shape and contour. OrthoPets believes each individual patient requires a custom made brace to appropriately address their instability and/or injury. Even though the basic anatomy and injury may be the same, a device will fit very differently on a 50-pound Bulldog versus a 50-pound Golden Retriever. As such, custom fabrication allows us to create an ideal fit for each patient and can therefore address their injury more appropriately.

Will my pet chew the device off?

Very rarely do we see our patients chew their device. When a patient chews their device, it is usually an indication that a modification or adjustment to improve the fit and/or function is required. Please contact your OrthoPets VOP Specialist immediately if your pet is chewing on the device.

What is an orthotic (leg brace)?

An orthosis is a device used to support or “brace” an existing limb. An orthotic device can be easily put on (donned) or taken off (doffed) with a Velcro system.

An orthosis can replicate the immobilization of a traditional cast or create dynamic range of motion featuring control, resistance, enhancement, protection and guidance over and affected joint.

What is a prosthetic (replacing of the limb)?

A prosthesis is a device used to “replace” a missing limb segment due to elective subtotal amputation, trauma or congenital deformity.

What if my pet is missing an entire limb?

To attach a functional forelimb prosthesis, at least 40% of the radius and ulna (forearm) must remain intact. For a hind limb prosthesis, it’s ideal for the entire tibia and fibula (shin bones) to be present. However, advanced prosthetic solutions may still be available for partial tibia/fibula amputations.

OrthoPets is committed to exploring every possible solution. Our team can evaluate your pet’s specific case to determine if a custom prosthetic is a viable option. If a prosthetic is not feasible, we can work with you and your veterinarian to discuss alternatives, such as bracing the contralateral (opposite) limb. This can help improve mobility and mitigate the adverse effects of compensation on the remaining limbs.

We ship all devices via UPS complimentary ground shipping in the continental US, with options overnight delivery. Please include the following information with your impression or pet's device in your shipment:

Your first & last name
Your pet’s name

How should I package an impression for shipping?

Device Fitting & Follow-Up

How do I fit my pet's device?

Please watch our fitting video or have your veterinarian assist with the initial fit. Your device will also come with a wearing schedule and care instructions.

How do I know if the brace fits correctly on my pet?

Look for signs of proper fit, such as no fur loss or skin redness. Reach out to your veterinarian and OrthoPets with photos of concerns, if you notice issues like:

  • Increased lameness (limping)
  • Swelling or skin sores
  • Fur Loss
  • Chewing on the device

Media can be sent to info@orthopets.com. Please include your pet’s name and your last name in the subject line.

What if the device needs adjustments?

Adjustments are a normal part of the process, and typically take 4 days to complete. Please contact our team using this form if you think the brace should be adjusted.

How long can my pet wear a V-OP (Veterinary Orthotic & Prosthetic) device?

OrthoPets provides general wearing schedule guidelines, but we strongly recommend that your veterinarian or rehabilitation therapist customize the schedule to suit your pet’s specific therapeutic needs.

For most cases, we suggest starting with a two-week introductory period. During this time, your pet should wear the device for short sessions daily. This allows you to:

  • Monitor your pet's skin for any irritation
  • Assess the device's fit and function closely

After this introductory period, your veterinarian may recommend gradually transitioning to a “full-time” schedule, typically wearing the device during the day and removing it at night.

For post-operative support or cases requiring a "curative treatment plan," a 24-hour wear schedule may be recommended. This intensive schedule should include 3-5 non-weight-bearing air breaks throughout the day to allow your pet's skin to rest.

Your veterinarian will help determine the best schedule to optimize your pet’s recovery and mobility.

Are OrthoPets V-OP devices water-proof?

Yes! OrthoPets devices are designed to withstand water activities like swimming, water therapy, or playing near oceans, rivers, and lakes.

The device is lined with "closed-cell" foam, which is waterproof and does not absorb water. However, the straps and padsmay absorb some water but can easily be air-dried.

After water activities, we recommend:

  • Towel-drying your pet's leg and the device to remove excess water.
  • Wringing our the straps and pads to speed up drying.
  • Letting the straps and pads air-dry overnight while the brace is off.

This care ensures the device stays clean and ready for daily use!

Can I order replacement parts for my pet’s brace?

Most removable components such as straps, pads, hardware, tread, etc. can be replaced at home. Please contact your VOP Case Manager and they can go over your pet’s specific device.

When should my pet’s device be refurbished?

We recommend refurbishing your pet’s brace every 12-24 months, depending on their activity level and environment. Refurbishment ensures your pet’s brace stays in top condition and functioning optimally.

Refurbishment involves:

  • Stripping the device down to it's shell.
  • Cleaning the shell thoroughly
  • Replacing all soft goods, including foam liners, tread, straps, pads, and other worn components.

Once refurbished, your device will look and function like new! However, because the foam conforms to your pet’s unique anatomy, we only recommend refurbishment when truly necessary. In some cases, only specific parts may need replacement.

To determine what your pet’s device needs, please send updated media (photos and videos) to your VOP Specialist, who will guide you through the process.
